This study aimed to investigate the relationship of academic engagement and sense of university belonging with academic achievement in virtual education among students of the Islamic Azad University Electronic Branch. This applied study employed a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population consisted of approximately 25,000 students enrolled at the Islamic Azad University Electronic Branch during the 2024–2025 academic year, from whom 300 students were selected through random sampling. Data were collected using an academic engagement questionnaire, a university belonging questionnaire, and an objective indicator of academic achievement based on students’ mean grades in virtual courses. The internal consistency of the self-report instruments was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression analysis were applied using SPSS, with the significance level set at 0.05. Academic engagement was positively and significantly correlated with academic achievement in virtual education (r = 0.53, p < 0.001). Sense of university belonging was also positively and significantly associated with academic achievement (r = 0.46, p < 0.001), while academic engagement and university belonging were significantly correlated with each other (r = 0.44, p < 0.001). The multiple regression model was statistically significant, F(2, 297) = 78.11, p < 0.001, and academic engagement and university belonging jointly explained 34.5% of the variance in academic achievement (R² = 0.345). Academic engagement (β = 0.406, p < 0.001) and sense of university belonging (β = 0.281, p < 0.001) were both significant positive predictors of academic achievement. Higher academic engagement and a stronger sense of university belonging were associated with better academic achievement in virtual education, suggesting that strengthening students’ active participation in learning and their psychological connection with the university may contribute to improved outcomes in online higher education.
