Abstract

This study aimed to explore and conceptualize the major patterns through which honor killings are reposted on virtual social networks, with particular emphasis on Instagram. This qualitative exploratory study involved 30 participants, including university faculty members and specialists in sociology, communication, and psychology, independent researchers in social and cultural issues, and journalists and social writers. Participants were selected through purposive and judgmental sampling, supplemented where necessary by snowball sampling. Eligibility criteria included relevant academic or professional experience concerning honor killings, social violence, or media representation, as well as at least two years of Instagram use. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews lasting approximately 40–60 minutes. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis with the support of MAXQDA. The analytic process included familiarization with the data, initial coding, development of subthemes, formation of broader themes, thematic review, and final definition and interpretation of the themes. The analysis identified seven major reposting patterns: reactive and episodic reposting, empathetic reposting, plural and multi-pattern reposting, news-informational reposting, emotional-affective reposting, justificatory or custom-oriented reposting, and activist-protest reposting. The findings indicated that reposting extended beyond simple information transmission and served multiple functions, including emotional discharge, sympathy, public visibility of violence, reproduction of traditional norms, discursive contestation, criticism of gendered structures, and demands for social change. Reposting honor killings on virtual social networks is a multilayered meaning-making process through which users may simultaneously reproduce, reinterpret, or challenge cultural and gendered narratives associated with honor-related violence.
